ALABAMA COACHING STAFF NAMED FOR ALL-STAR CLASSIC
Hoover's Josh Niblett will be joined by seven assistants on Alabama team coaching staff in December 12 Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic in Mobile.
Mobile, Ala. (Aug. 10) – The eight-member coaching staff that will lead the team of top senior high school football stars and collegiate prospects from Alabama against Mississippi in the 23rd annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic, set for December 12 in Mobile's Ladd-Peebles Stadium, is now in place.
Earlier this year, Hoover High School head coach Josh Niblett was named the Alabama team's head coach by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA) in conjunction with the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA).
The AHSADCA and AHSAA announced the rest of the Alabama team coaching staff on Monday and it includes three coaches who led their teams to state championships in 2008 – Prattville head coach Jamey DuBose, who coached the Lions to their third straight 6A championship in his first year at the helm; Kerry Stevenson of Vigor, who led the Wolves to a perfect 15-0 season and the 5A state title; and Keith Etheredge of Leeds, who guided the Green Wave to the school's first-ever Class 3A state title and an undefeated 15-0 season.
Other team Alabama assistants include Jay Brown, head coach at Pell City; Gardner Gilliland, head coach at Oneonta High School, who helped lead the Redskins to the state 3A championship in 2004 as defensive coordinator for then head coach Josh Niblett; and Dickey Wright, head coach at Homewood High School where he served as defensive coordinator when the Patriots won state crowns in 2005, 2004, 2002 and 2000. He became head coach following the 2005 season.
Tad Niblett, an assistant coach at Hoover, will serve as the Alabama All-Star team's scout coach. "This is an outstanding staff of coaches who will undoubtedly do a tremendous job in preparing the team of top student-athletes who will represent Alabama in this year's All-Star Classic, said Steve Bailey, Director of the AHSADCA, which selects the Alabama coaching staff for the Classic each year.
Niblett guided the Bucs to the 6A state finals in 2008, falling 16-13 to DuBose's Prattville team in the Class 6A championship game. He previously served as offensive coordinator for head coach Joey Jones (Mountain Brook) in the 2006 All-Star Classic won by Alabama, 28-3, and was also an assistant coach on the staff of Willie Carl Martin (Benjamin Russell) in the 2003 game won by Alabama, 24-16.
"We had Andre Smith in the 2006 game and Jamarcus Russell quarterbacked in the 2003 game," said Niblett. "Most of the players in this game will also go on to play at the college level and some will even play in the NFL on Sundays" Annually featuring 74 of the best high school players and top collegiate prospects from two states rich in football tradition, the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic is the South's premier interstate high school football event. Seventeen former All-Star Classic players have been selected in the first round of the NFL Draft, and over 80 All-Star Classic alums are currently listed on Southeastern Conference team rosters.
Now under new management by The Mishkin Group, a Mobile-based sports marketing firm, the All-Star Classic will also seek to raise awareness for high school athletic and academic excellence and various charitable programs in both states.
